Testing Methodology Comparing Two Ink Sets

 

  • To compare a development ink set to a target set (for example, an OEM set).

  • To compare a development ink set for printer/print condition variables.

  • To compare a competitive ink set to Vera or OEM ink set.

 
- Vehicle – Jetting Performance Testing - 

 

Single Channel Endurance

Custom single channel print files are sent to the printer to force the printing of a single channel color at various resolutions.  The test is performed for up to 500 ml of ink in a single run.  Performance is evaluated for nozzle dropout or transient nozzle loss.  Poor performance is an indication that the ink may have a high concentration of dissolved gasses, is poorly filtered, has incorrect fluid properties or rheology, or has a colloidal particle size issue.

 
Multi-Channel Endurance

Custom full channel print files are sent to the printer to force the printing of multiple color channels at various resolutions.  The test is performed for up to 500 ml of ink for all colors in large runs.  Performance is evaluated for nozzle drop or transient nozzle loss.

 

Capping Station/Flush Box/Wiper Blade/Printhead Faceplate

The condition of all components is monitored over a series of prints, usually 1 million square inches printed, to assess the performance of the ink in the printer ink delivery/waste system. 

 

- Colormetric Testing - 

 

Gamut/Hue/Chroma

The inks are printed onto single channel patches from 10% laydown to 100% laydown for small, medium, and large drops.  Colorimeteric measurements are taken using an X-Rite i1 spectrophotometer. Values are reported in L*a*b* and LCH color space and compared to a target inkset.

Intermix patches for all channels are printed using both 8 channel and 10 channel mode. Values are reported in L*a*b* and LCH color space and compared to a target inkset.  1485 color patches  are measured after a specified time lapse from printing using an ECI2002 test chart. Readings are made using an X-Rite i1Isis spectrophotometer. Values are reported in L*a*b* and LCH color space and compared to a target inkset. Gamut spaces are reported in 2D slices through L values and 3D color space modelling.

 

Cure Time

Same test as intermix testing but with colorimeteric measurements taken after 5 min, 20 min, 60 min, 1 day, 3 days, 5 days.

 

Gloss

Single channel prints are made with 100% laydown and standardized printer settings.  Readings are made using a 60º Glossmeter. Values are reported in gloss units or percentage reflection.

 
Bronzing/ Metamerism

Comparative prints are visually compared under various light sources for any bronzing or metameric effects.
